Meriam Mir

Meriam Mir (language of the Meriam people) has it roots into PNG. It’s currently known, (in this country) as the Eastern Island Language of the Torres Strait Region. Currently, this language is on the critically endangered list of dying languages.

Torres Strait Creole, or Yumpla Tok, as it’s been recognised by linguists, has been a great killer of Meriam Mir as the first language of daily use amongst the Meriam. Yumpla Tok is the first language used at home, and in everyday life, in Mer and across the region.
